15. Their Eyes Were Watching God

Pg. 21 “There are years that ask questions and years that answer.” 


In this paragraph Janie realizes that she won’t be able to live the years for answers so instead she was forced to ask the questions that she would have felt better learning for herself. She doesn’t know the way love works. She asks if marriage ‘ends the cosmic loneliness of the unmated’, or if it even ‘compels love like the sun of the day’.  Using COMPEL however would be like forcing love - exactly what she is being forced to do.
